North Bristol Relief Sewer completed

Credit where it’s due. Wessex Water have confirmed they completed the North Bristol Relief Sewer in 2023. The sewer provides over 30,000m3 of underground storage, primarily to reduce flooding and accommodate future development and climate change.

A relief spur was also constructed to relieve excess flows in the trunk sewer flowing through Coombe Dingle (under the path). The aim was to reduce untreated flood water discharges entering the Trym. They have also upgraded the manhole covers along the path near Coombe Dingle. To me it looks as though this is working, certainly I see ‘sanitary litter’ less often than I used to. I’ll keep an eye on the CSO data (though the reporting is some months in arrears so it’ll be a while before that tells the story one way or the other).

So, good news – but as ever, if you see what you think is sewage call – 0345 600 4600 – straightaway so Wessex Water can investigate.

Thanks to Peter Coleman-Smith for this report
