This year, it’s all about the Balsam

Thanks to everybody who’s already been involved in Balsam Bashing this season. We aim to clear all of the Himalayan Balsam from the River Trym and Hazel Brook.

We’ve made a great start with over 80 people getting involved in our first events and were delighted to be joined by the Lord Mayor in Blaise Estate.

Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant that spreads easily, crowds out native plants and ultimately causes erosion of the river banks. Once identified, it needs to be pulled out, the stem snapped beneath the lowest node to prevent regrowth snapped (the roots are really shallow) and piled up to dry out.

Eight different groups are organising activities to clear the Balsam in their patch. To get involved contact us at troutinthetrym@gmail.com.

If you spot any Himalayan Balsam, please report it here.
