Bullhead spotted while riverfly sampling

Peter Coleman-Smith and new volunteer Kai Chapman have been busy riverfly sampling. Kai has just been trained and will concentrate on a site on the lower Trym, fairly near Bell Barn Road. Peter was surprised that the sample wasn’t great: twenty or so shrimps and one each of cased and caseless caddis.

In the sample tray they also found three bullheads, an elver and what they thought was part of a crayfish claw. Peter has asked BART if they can identify what species of crayfish this may be. If it was from a non-native invasive species this would confirm what the Wild Trout Trust suspected when they did an advisory report on the river in 2019.
