Peter Coleman-Smith reports…
Before yesterday’s rain, Mike and I waded the Hazel Brook from Henbury ford to the bridge at Tormarton Crescent. We found 15 separate outfalls. Some seemed redundant (eg blocked with silt), others were flowing slightly with clear water and no smell or detritus (probably road runoff). However, two were trickling milky, smelly (nasty!) and definitely polluted effluent into the stream. I’ll report these to both the Council and Wessex Water.
While there, we saw a green woodpecker and 2 little egrets plus some yellow flag iris plants – nice to see nature doing its thing. There was a trolley (!) and a bit of rubbish but nothing near as bad as it used to be.
Other volunteers will do further “outfall safaris” as the weather permits so we cover the whole of the River Trym and Hazel Brook.
